I highly recommend this one for the early years; in fact, I am buying a second one to have as a back up in case the flaps on this one get too worn. Pulling the flaps open to see the surprise behind each one keeps his attention steadily and he enjoys learning the animal sounds. My son is 1-year old and this is the first book to really capture his attention. He brings it to me to read over and over again every day.
We find lots to talk about in the details of the picture, plus the lift-the-flap pages keep her entertained. This is a very simple book, smaller than I expected, but my 15 month old really enjoys it.
This is one of my daughters favorite books because she can open the doors and say the names and sounds of each animal.
not a book to be "passed on" 2nd qualm. Two qualms about book. They list the baby horse who is saying "neigh, neigh" as "A PONY" instead of "A FOAL or FILLY" for us horse lovers out there, there is no greater upset then having a child call a baby horse pony. the edges wear out easily. My 7 month old used it as a teether and within minutes the edges were white.
I would think there's a way to make the flaps easier to open, if with keeping the book pocket size. The flaps are too small for my 13-month old son to open -- they just end up frustrating him.
